The Foo Fighters Announce They’ll Continue Following Taylor Hawkins’ Death
The Foo Fighters are one of the most beloved and renowned rock bands in the world, having been active since the mid-1990s and garnering millions of fans over the course of their impressive career. Recently, they made waves when they announced that they will continue on even after drummer Taylor Hawkins untimely death in 2022. This news was met with much celebration and enthusiasm from their loyal fans, as it was a prospect many thought would be impossible due to the iconic nature of Hawkins’ role in the band’s sound.
The Foo Fighters were formed by frontman Dave Grohl after he left his former band Nirvana following the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994. After constructing a makeshift studio in his basement, Grohl began recording demo tracks that eventually turned into The Foo Fighters debut album, released in 1995 to great critical acclaim. With Grohl on vocals and guitar, Pat Smear on second guitar, Nate Mendel on bass, and William Goldsmith on drums (who was later replaced by Taylor Hawkins), The Foo Fighters quickly gained traction as one of the most popular rock bands of the late 1990s.
Hawkins joined The Foo Fighters shortly after their first album debuted and went on to become an integral part of their sound. In addition to providing powerful drumming skills throughout all subsequent records (which include There Is Nothing Left To Lose, One By One, In Your Honor, Echoes Silence Patience & Grace, Wasting Light, Sonic Highways and Concrete & Gold), he also contributed backing vocals for many songs such as “Everlong” off of 1997’s The Colour And The Shape album.
Hawkins is known for being an exceptionally skilled drummer who has helped craft some of The Foo Fighter’s most memorable tunes such as “All My Life” from 2002’s One By One album (which won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance) or 2016’s “Run” from their ninth studio album Concrete & Gold (which peaked at number three on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart).
After a long period of silence after Hawkins’ death – only broken by two huge tribute concerts in London and Los Angeles – in March of 2022, the Foo Fighters released a statement that read in-part:
“As we say goodbye to the most difficult and tragic year that our band has ever known, we are reminded of how thankful we are for the people that we love and cherish most, and for the loved ones who are no longer with us,” read the band’s statement. “Foo Fighters were formed 27 years ago to represent the healing power of music and a continuation of life, and for the past 27 years, our fans have built a worldwide community, a devoted support system that has helped us all get through the darkest of times together. A place to share our joy and our pain, our hopes and fears, and to join a chorus of life together through music.” “Without Taylor, we never would have become the band that we were – and without Taylor, we know that we’re going to be a different band going forward.”
It is clear that The Foo Fighter’s outlook for 2023 is an optimistic one despite the inevitable passing of Taylor Hawkins yet still honors him accordingly which is why we look forward to all new music these veterans have planned next year and beyond!
